Tasting New Cross

So, you came to Goldsmiths to get your degree or just for a visit. After a long day of learning, strolling around campus, admiring the beautiful buildings, and getting to know our brilliant academics, you settle down for a rest on the College Green. Your tummy is rumbling. Your mouth is watering for a juicy burger, mean chips, a steaming rice bowl, or a fresh wrap.

New Cross has so many dining and snacking options that it is hard to make a definite choice! Here is a guide around my personal favourites to satisfy all your cravings:

  1. The Rose

The local favourite of staff and academics – enjoy some classic pub food, wood-fired pizza, or stay for a fine supper meal. New Cross locals like to lounge with their date in the cosy dining space, enjoy the notorious London weather in the garden, or sometimes even hire the whole top floor for a birthday party!

Price range: ££

Favourite menu items: Tre-Carne pizza, Franklin & Sons Elderflower Lemonade

Similar vibe: The Fat Walrus, The New Cross House

2. 7 Burgers

Here is a delicious fast-food option for those always on the go. A wide menu of American burgers, wraps, and milkshakes along with healthier options, such as grilled meats and salads. Perfect for a quick snack, late-night munchies, or a library takeaway.

Price range: £

Favourite menu items: Cheesy chips, Nutella Milkshake

Similar vibe: Beirut Canteen (Lebanese), Takeshi Sushi (Pan-Asian), Goldsmiths Café

3. Wakey Wakey

The perfect breakfast food spot with affordable pricing. Fluffy pancakes, eggs benedict, sourdough sandwiches or a full English – everything you wish you had time to make for breakfast but for some reason never do. Delicious hot drinks to grab before a long day in Uni – just the energy boost you need to finally submit your essays.

Price range: ££

Favourite menu items: Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Dirty Chai Latte

Similar vibe: Chinwag

4. Badger Badger

The best spot when you want to do it all at once: study, chat, eat, and take your Instagram pictures. The cosy workspace lounge is adjacent to a large board games library, inviting you to stay for some vibrant disco in the evening. Their Japanese fusion menu will also not disappoint, offering a range of flavourful starters and salad boxes.

Price range: ££

Favourite menu items: Tare Steak Salad Box, Fried Bao Buns

Similar vibe (but not quite): The Pizza Room

5. Greenwich Market

Varied cuisines, artisan stalls and affordable takeaways all in one place! Located next to the Cutty Sark Museum on the bank of Thames, Greenwich Market makes a lovely spot for a weekend stroll. Come here if you are feeling adventurous, try as many cuisines as you can and burn the calories afterwards by climbing Greenwich Park hills.

Price range: £-££

Favourite stalls: Teriyaki-Ya, Brazilian Churros

Similar vibe: Deptford Market Yard

Bon Appetit!
