Goldsmiths Travels: UKUS Surrey

Last Tuesday (5th of March) I travelled to the University of Surrey to represent Goldsmiths at one of the UK University Search fairs. UKUS is a brilliant opportunity for high school, college, and 6th form students to discover their future options, such as university courses and apprenticeships. This is where you come to chat with existing students about their experience, ask the exhibitor about courses and requirements and register your interest in further campus events and opportunities.

I became an off-campus ambassador for Goldsmiths just recently and was absolutely thrilled to go on my first work trip. The travel from London to Surrey was a bit of a challenge, as my train kept being delayed due to urgent railway works. I managed to bravely push through and with a bit of investigation, negotiation, and sneaking around the platforms I managed to catch one of the last trains to Guildford. Then I took a bus and jogged through Surrey Sports park to the venue in the pouring rain, but the event was definitely worth it!

I got to explore a new area, set up a beautiful stand, chatted with enthusiastic and curious students about my academic and professional passions, and even hop around in a trampoline park after. Once you make your own higher education decision, I strongly recommend looking into combining work and study with your own university to be engaged in such exciting opportunities too!

You couldn’t make it to the event, was short for time, or just impatient to learn more?

FAQs from the UKUS Surrey:

  1. Where is Goldsmiths located?

Goldsmiths is a campus university (quite a rarity for London!) located in South-East London, New Cross. While you get to live and study in a more secluded, student-oriented area, central London is still right on your doorstep and takes just about 30-45 minutes to reach by Overground and tube. This is especially good in terms of more acceptable Zone 2 housing and food prices and socialising with other students, as you get to regularly see the same people on a united campus and effortlessly make friends.

2. What disciplines do you specialise in?

Goldsmiths has a strong creative incline with most popular disciplines being Fine Art, Media and Communications, and Design. At the same time, we do offer wonderful courses in Psychology, Law, Computer Science, Business, and Economics with academics and alumni just as well-known as those in the creative sector. No matter the course, you should expect a unique and creative approach to teaching, study materials, skills, and assignments with a strong emphasis on social justice and political activism.

3. Do you do medicine?

Sorry :(

Summarising the exciting UKUS Surrey day in just a few words does not do it justice.
